Cannabis: Know the risks

Cannabis: Know the risks

On October 17, 2018 cannabis will be legal in Ontario. To buy, have or use cannabis you must be 19 or older. Cannabis remains illegal for anyone under 19 years of age. The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board does not permit smoking or the use of cannabis at school or board sanctioned activities or events. The Student Code of Conduct outlines expectations of student behavior, including consequences for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

As a Catholic school community, the HWCDSB is committed to ensuring student safety, which includes prevention of cannabis use among youth. The following resources provide facts about cannabis, risk factors associated with use, and ways to engage youth in the conversation about cannabis.

Routine vaccines for you and your family

Routine vaccines for you and your family

Why get vaccines?

Vaccines save lives, are safe and effective. The benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks of disease.

Vaccines are the only way for you to be protected from some diseases.

There is no treatment for some diseases, such as diphtheria and meningococcal diseases. These diseases lead to death in one in 10 people who get them.

You can protect yourself and those around you from diseases. Babies are less likely to get pertussis or flu if their parents and caregivers get the vaccines.

Check out https://www.hamilton.ca/public-health/heal ... to read more about:

• Vaccines safety

• Side effects
• Ways to prepare your child

Routine vaccines in Ontario are provided free of cost to help protect you and your child from serious illness.

Food Substitutes for Anaphylactic Students

Food Substitutes for Anaphylactic Students

There are students in our schools, who have severe allergies to foods and other substances. At times, even exposure to a tiny amount of these foods or substances could be potentially serious and life-threatening. We can all play a positive role in preventing such a dangerous and frightening situation at our school. The specific students and their families are taking responsibility to avoid exposures. However, staff members, other students and their families can also help to make the school environment safer.

Below are some websites that can provide information on food substitutes for anaphylactic students. Feel free to speak to your school administration should you have any questions.
